Journal Entry – Wednesday December 13th 1916

In the paper to day is an announcement from Washington that Germany desires peace. Bethmann von Holweg delivers a bombastic speech in the Reichstag saying that now Germany is ready for peace, but states no terms. The Daily News in an article today says that now is the Allies opportunity to state definitely their terms of peace. But what of that there will be before any settlement can be arrived at, yet it is a cheering thought.

It has been a depressing day. Very cold & wet with rain & snow. I was busy this morning sewing & writing & giving Elizabeth lessons, & in the afternoon more sewing.

Choir practise with very few at it & so near Christmas & the music not nearly learnt & after dinner more sewing & so to bed.

Heard this morning the Gerald Ashton is engaged at last. Wonder what sort of a woman she is. I hope not a fast giddy creature, he wants someone with some grit in her.
