Journal Entry – Sunday December 17th 1916

Nothing seems to have come of these peace proposals. No one knows what Germany’s terms are, as she has not stated them.

On Friday a confirmation service was held in our church. Bishop Trefusis took it & gave 2 beautiful & earnest addresses.

I went to Exeter after lunch and spent the night there. I arrived at tea time & found the family at Southernhay in the consulting room. Baby having grown a lot since my last visit. It was queer going there as a visitor & being announced instead of letting myself in with my latch key. It was nice seeing them again.

After tea I went up to the hospital & saw 3 of my former patients, Wariow, Learoyd & Sgt Nicholls & had long chats with them. I went also into the office & listened to some long stories from George Walsh. Saw also Peggy & heard her fair laugh again, met Miss Edmonds to whom I commended three plum Puddings, which I had brought.

Chatted with Miss Snow & Miss Sykes, it felt queer being back there again & yet not belonging to it all. Back again to Southernhay & after dinner a long chat & to the bed about midnight. Very refreshing to talk with some one again.

The weather is still very cold. When I returned on Sat the roads were in a fearfully slippery state, snow & ice. To day it has been lovely, bright sun and the country white glistening with a hoar frost. 12 degrees last night.
