Journal Entry – Friday October 14th 1915

Yest Mary came to Exeter, to see what can be done, and this morning we both went to see a lawyer, a Mr Andrew a friend of the Worthington’s and the man I have met here. Rob W says he is just the man for the case.

It was very alarming proceeding, and we were there nearly an hour. At 1st he did not hold out much hope, but after studying the agreement, he had a clause which stated that only the Deputy County Director could dismiss anyone on the recommendation of the OC. Mr Andrew drew off a letter asking the OC when he had recommended Mary’s dismissal, without ever having reproved her for all the crimes she is supposed to have committed.

We were glad to hear his advice on the matter, as he was so clear & deliberate.

It is all a horrid business, this quarrelling with the enemy at the gate, for things are not going well with us.

In to days paper is a very serious statement by Lord Milner implying that the Gallipolli business may be have to be given up, now that Bulgaria has turned the wrong way it makes matters more difficult. Evelyn Worthington had a telegram to day from her sister Ethel who has been in Belgrade that she is now safe at Nish. Terrible things have been done at Belgrade.
