Writer’s Retreat

Ever thought you had the write stuff, but are too bogged down in everyday life to make the best literary moves? Many writers have. Working from home has its sure advantages, but also brings with it many small drawbacks which can stifle the creative tendencies.

Distractions – from mountains of washing up to screaming children – all take a toll. The drudgery of daily chores keep your imagination grounded. Those around you may be tempted to ask for a little favour – after all, you aren’t doing anything important right now, are you? You have the ideas, you have the motivation, but you simply don’t have the space you need to put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard.

With space and separation comes a new freedom. Writer’s and author’s retreats provide a sanctuary from complications, a peaceful surcease from procrastination in a friendly and safe environment. Freedom from responsibilities – even for the briefest of times – allows the imagination to soar, the fingers to tap or to drag the pen across hungry paper. At last you are filling the void with your own creation, a personal genesis unbounded by reality.

Your only interruptions are well timed, simple meals and an offer of the company of like-minded individuals; talented writers beginning or continuing their own journeys, with the same goals and needs as yourself. The occasional, optional, writing seminars, challenges and exercises designed to put you into the mentality you crave; the better to engage your own capabilities. Whether you need this short while to begin a short story or to put final touches to your epic novel, your time is your own, and your work will stand for itself.

Kelly House in Devon offers you this solitude and support. With three large rooms, three meals a day, and only three writers in residence at any time, distractions are kept to a minimum. In addition to the privacy of your room, space – and importantly – peace and quiet is available in the ground floor of the house, throughout the grounds and even in the surrounding countryside. Write at your own pace, delivering your own manuscript to your own timetable. Good luck, and happy writing.
