Journal Entry –Wednesday December 16th 1914

Wimbledon came here on Monday, just to catch a glimpse of Ursula & the child. The latter is quite a different baby from what she was when she left Kelly in Sep. she is now very round & fat, with a very comic face, lovely colour & beautiful eyes. A baby in fact to feel proud of.

On Monday during my journey up, two private’s got into the same carriage. There was an elderly woman also there, who talked a great deal to them. One was in the R.F.A. & had been wounded and Mons, but he said he knew very little of what happened then as he could not see the enemy. The other was a Canadian & belongs to 19 Aller la Dragoons.

Yesterday Ursula & I went up to town to shop. We began with Harrods, & then went on to the Canadian Studio to meet Elzie. Had lunch with her at Harrods. Afterwards we went to Lares & Penates [tk] to see Hilda Hewit, we saw also Hilda who I have not seen for years.

We bought a very nice present for Father a brass muffin stand to go down by the fire.

We has tea at Petie Robinson. Very poor place.

The journey home by bus as far as Knightsbridge was very interesting. The streets are only just lighted enough for people to see the way. None of the big arc lights are used. The busses only have one light in front. The whole effect is rather weird, and when we got to Hyde Park Corner, there on the top of the arch a searchlight apparatus, searching the sky for Zeppelins.

This afternoon as Ursula and I will go into the station wheeling baby in her pram, we saw some paperboys with posters. “Scarborough shelled by Germans.” We at once bought a staff & red there an official announcement by the Admiralty, that situations were developing in the North Sea, and that Scarborough was shelled.
