At last 2 of our young men have come forward as recruits. Mrs Smith told me after church that George Weville was going. I went up, & saw Mrs Smith & she told me also about it. He saw her yest. afternoon, when he was outside our gate at 4.30 waiting to see me, but just at that time I came up by the little black gate. He had made his mind to go, & has been trying to persuade others too. I went down to Yalford after lunch & saw him, & made arrangements for him to go in to Tavistock tomorrow. Several others would like to go, but their parents are all against it, it is so cheering to think that after all they mean to come forward, but they are slow & don’t hurry over things.
Evelyn took the service at Evensong & sang the versicles. As a voluntary (outgoing) after the national anthem, I played the Marseillaise. Outside in the road I again saw Wevill, he had with him Tom Dryer, so those two are to go into Tavistock in Arthur’s car tomorrow.
