Journal Entry –Monday January 11th 1915

Until this moment 6 PM I have had very little time or energy for writing.

The day I came up to the hospital, I was first sent up to the OC’s office to be interviewed by Dr Worthington & he at once said I must stay with them again which of course is nice for me, although 10 minutes walk. I was put into a medical ward chiefly men with frostbitten feet, over me was Miss Marker, & over us both is a very stern old sister, who has a most forbidding face & crusty manner but who looks nice for all that.

There is a general feeling of cheerfulness here & everyone seems very happy. The matron is very charming. That first day I washed until 6, & was on the next morning at 7.30 when we all have breakfast & go to our wards at 8.

On Saturday aft. I was in the V.A.D. club when in rushed Mary saying that Bob was in Exeter with the Strongs & that we were to come straight out of there & see him. Mrs S drove us in her carriage & there he was looking thin & not very well. He came across France & so got home sooner. He has a commission in the N Devon Yeomanry, in the same as Charles Hamlyn.

We talked a long talk & then had tea & I had a rush for hospital, & only just got in in time. To my consternation sister told me I was to be left in charge that evening, also in the morning & take all the temp & pulses & respirations, it was very alarming. If only I had been able to go in for the nursing course it would have been some help, but to plunge straight into it, was very difficult.

The men are all so nice I am getting quite fond of them. One a Scotchman called Miller in the Gordon Highlanders is so screamingly funny & all the time has a most solemn face.

Yest. being Sunday Bob & Mary both came in and had a chat with them, which they much enjoyed.
